Inspiration For Your Week: We Don’t Do Perfect Here

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to volunteer in our granddaughter’s elementary school. It happens to be the same school where my daughter-in-law teaches art and I was lucky enough to spend time in her art room. Like other subjects, art is very much as process of learning and building upon that learning. I have heard her say over and over again to her students and our granddaughter…

” We don’t do perfect here, we do Process.” ~Lindsay Thibault

I heard her say it again on the day I volunteered. What a wise thing to say to these young children who were daring to be creative. They were indeed learning a life lesson that none of us are perfect we just keep trying and putting our best effort forward.

As adults, we are daring everyday to get it right, to find our self worth in who we are rather than the things we do. We are trying to do and be our best but because life is a journey, we fall short. When we fall short, we forget that life is a process and we don’t always get it right the first time. In those instances, what if we could say to ourselves: We don’t do perfect here, we do process. This allows an opportunity in that very moment for a fresh start and a kinder and gentler way to be in the world.

Inspiration for Life: Are You Too Busy?

Are you feeling like your life is a merry go round that never slows down? My clients tell me that when this happens they have lost control and feel like life is living them rather than living life. This results in not enough time to do what they wanted or they had lost the purpose behind their busyness. Most of us are not able to change everything at once but we can all make just one change that will impact our life in a positive way.

Many years ago I decided to give this a try, so reluctantly I made the time before everyone else got up. This was hard, it was difficult to crawl out of that warm bed when I wanted to do was sleep.  However, I made the decision to begin anyway, not knowing that over time this became one of the most valuable things I have ever done for myself because the benefits were immediate:

The time helped me to reconnect with myself,  focus on what was important and find a renewed purpose in the things I did. What choice are you willing to make to be more intentional with your time?

Below are some sample questions to get you started but you may use your time in any way that feeds your soul.

  • Look at the day ahead, what do you desire more of, even a few minutes can help.
  • Decide what attitude or attribute you want to foster in the day ahead.
  • Where can you make a change that will benefit you?

There is no magic formula to finding a balance between between what you want and how you live but there is only one way to begin and that is by taking the first step.

Are You Craving A Simpler Way To Live?

I love the rock sculpture in the forefront of this picture as a metaphor for life; some things are a focus point and others are in the background.  It reflects to me what you get when you decide to make changes that simplify your day to day choices about how to live. What you value comes to the forefront and becomes the basis for your choices, everything else is in the background.  It’s true, there are some things we don’t have a choice about, but there are also a lot of choices we make every day that we are not even aware of, and we do have choice about those. Tsh Oxenreider, author of The Art of Simple Blog, puts it nicely in these words.

Do the choices I make line up with how I really want to live? It is about living life instead of life living us – one small choice after another, day after day, month after month, year after glorious year. It is about living with intention.

My question to you is simple:

Are the choices you make each day lining up with what you want for your life?

What choice can you make for yourself today that will bring you closer to that?

Inspiration For Your Week: Getting Unstuck

All of us, at certain times in our life get stuck. It might be in our personal relationships, a home situation, in our job, or any number of other areas that our life touches. Since it happens to all of us, it does not matter that it happens, but rather how long we stay stuck. Staying in one place for too long creates hopelessness that things might not change and that thought alone can keep us from gaining traction.   My clients often tell me they have a hard time moving froward from this difficult spot so I wanted to offer a few tools in the form of questions to help you create movement forward.

  • What assumptions have I made about this?
  • Am I clear about what I want?
  • Can I turn this situation into a win/win
  • What are my choices?
  • What are the action steps I can take right now?

What Is Your Perspective?

Self-awareness helps you switch your perspective to a world view that sees solutions and not just problems.

I first learned about perspective while taking an art class in college. When the perspective was off, the picture changed completely. The same is true for us, when our perspective is off, our view of life and our ability to change it is skewed.   At times like this, our natural inclination is to narrow our focus to see the issue as a problem to be solved.

The more self aware we can become, the more we notice the clues it gives us. When life feels hard, I feel stuck and everything is frustrating, that is when I know I need to change my perspective.

Stepping back, pausing and taking a breath can begin the process of opening to a larger view. Reflecting on these questions further expands your awareness that helps you to align your thoughts with your greater good.

How does this fit into the bigger picture of my life?

Am I hanging on to something when I really need to let go?

What is the blessing that I am not seeing?

Do you believe there is good in the world and are your thoughts aligned with that goodness?

Remember, everything we do to create harmony and well-being takes practice and that is part of the safari or journey of your spirit.




Inspiration For Your Week:

I was sitting in church listening to several people talk about their recent mission trip to Tanzania. In an instant something resonated deep inside me that made me know I would be on the next trip. However, when my unconscious mind caught up to my conscious mind, I realized I was scared to death about this adventure that I felt compelled to take. There was much to consider, it was a third world country, I would be away for 3 weeks, there were lots of shots to get and malaria medicine to take, plus there were travel expenses I could not afford. My heart knew none of these things would really stop me so as I dug deeper, I found the real question I needed to ask myself.

Will I be courageous enough to open my heart to everything I see, and will I let that change me? This is a question we all must ask ourselves about our life. Will I be courageous enough to look at my life with compassion and make the changes so I can live abundantly in peace and harmony with myself and others?

I have just one question and that is, what is waiting in your life for you to look at and change?

Reflection: People will often ask, If I could just do one thing for myself, what would you advise? Hands down, it is to stop fighting what is or was in the past. With good reason we feel we need to hold on for dear life, afraid of what will happen if we let go. So many of us suffer with negative thoughts and beliefs that limit our ability to move forward in the way we would like. The ability to move forward is directly related to learning how to surrender to what is no longer needed!

Living Authentically: Resistance

There is one thing I know to be true for most of us; we like our path in life to be clear and comfortable. We have an attachment to knowing how the story will unfold long before it does and we like things to be sure and predictable. When this is not the case, as it so often is not, we suffer greatly. During times of uncertainty we are left trying to figure out how things are as they are, and how to control our life to make it better. When in truth what we need to do just the opposite and stop resisting it.

I learned this lesson when I was 13 or 14, before I had any idea this was any kind of life lesson.
